More bests – even on a longer course

EDDYVILLE – Montezuma’s cross country runners enjoyed a comfortable late September day for racing at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

EDDYVILLE – Montezuma’s cross country runners enjoyed a comfortable late September day for racing at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Runners earned medals if they finished in the top 10 in their races. Program-wide, Montezuma had 5 medalists in this meet:

4th – Jaxon Young, junior high boys;

6th – Ellen Cook, varsity girls;

6th – Luke Benson, junior high boys;

8th – Brea Cheney, junior high girls;

10th – Cael Cheney, high school boys.’

In addition, Alexa Rose had a personal record by 47 seconds and Sophia Semprini had a personal best by 73 seconds.

Also, Nick Damon finished his first varsity 5k run.

We had some stronger team results program-wide on a course that measured slightly long,” Coach Kevin Gartman said. “Despite that, our runners produced some of their best times all season.”

We ran well. There is lots to be proud of!”

UP NEXT – Some big school competition at Grundy Center on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Middle School Girls 3K

Montezuma 4th out of 5 scoring teams – 8, Brea Cheney, 13:33.90; 19, Alyssa Latcham, 15:20.14; 20, Lexi Urfer, 15:24.31; 21, Lucy Semprini, 15:43.01.; 23, Keegan Gustafson, 16:40.41. Ava DeWeese, no place or time.

Middle School Boys 3K

Montezuma no team score. 4, Jaxon Young, 12:27.12; 6, Luke Benson, 12:57.14. There were 21 runners

Varsity Girls 5K

Montezuma 3rd of 4 scoring teams – 6, Ellen Cook, 22:39.11; 13, Alexa Rose, 24:09.31; 24, Sophia Semprini, 25:53.11; 29, Claire Erselius, 26:45.22; 34, Karlee Knust, 28:12.39. Vivian Cook and Haileah Eichenberger, no place finish or time. There were 42 runners.

Varsity Boys 5K

Montezuma 3rd of 4 scoring teams – 10, Cael Cheney, 20:35.47; 12, Cade Lowry 20:43.90; 17, Jusiah Wetering, 21:11.68; 20, Dayton Reif, 21:26.37; 23, Bryson Stockman, 22:00.44. 26, Linkyn Bru, 22:59.65; 41, Nicholas Damon, 26:19.19. There were 49 runners.
