More bests for Braves at SICL meet

BELLE PLAINE – Montezuma’s boys track team found points tough to come by at the SICL meet on Tuesday, May 3.

But the team’s times and distances still made some improvement.

The Braves put up 24.5 points, good for ninth place in the team standings. But Coach John Beck saw some bright spots for the Braves.

We ran well in a very competitive conference meet,” Beck said.

Indeed, it was competitive. Lynnville-Sully, English Valleys, North Mahaska and Belle Plaine were the top four teams, and each produced more than 100 points.

The guys came out on a very cold night and we had multiple athletes producing personal records in events,” Beck said.

Top individual finish was a tie for fifth place n the high jump by Eli Bustamante, who was the Braves’ top individual scorer with eight team points. The Braves’ top relay was fifth by the 4×100. Bustamante was part of that, along with Carter Michalek, David Rose and Jack Erselius.

Our sprints continued to improve in both relays and individual events,” Beck said. “We are getting some good leadership from Eli Bustamante and Zach Bennett.”

Our distance crew continues to run races really well,” Beck said. “Colton Benson and Jayden Ross continue to push the group and their times.”

The shuttle hurdle group continued to push a personal record time despite a couple of hit hurdles and a tumble late in one of their runs,” the coach said. “I am very excited to see what they can do with a clean run.”

Our field events continue to get us points in meets,” Beck said. “We had a couple of personal records, which is very good to see this time of the year.’
