New roles, familiar results at jamboree

SULLY – The score . . .well, never mind that for the moment. It didn’t count anyway.

Coach Janel Burgess was pleased with the progress her Bravettes showed during their second public appearance of the new basketball season Monday evening, Nov. 18, at Lynnville-Sully’s jamboree.

‘Our ball movement improved from our scrimmage at Eddyville and our defense was much-improved,” she said.

I am encouraged by our team unity at this point in the season,” Burgess said. “We are very new in many positions and I look forward to us bonding more as the season progresses.”

For the record, the Bravettes rolled past PCM, a larger school, by a 38-15 score. Montezuma led 22-5 after the first quarter. Jamboree results don’t count as wins or losses, but the event allows the girls to play in game conditions.

It was a very solid 16 minutes for us tonight,” Burgess said.

Shateah Wetering, Maddy McKeag and Elise Boulton all scored nine points each for the Bravettes.

Montezuma shot .483 from the field, including .429 from behind the three-point arc. PCM’s figures were .261 and .250.

The Bravettes were big winners on the boards, 26-8. Shelby Conger led the way here with six rebounds.

Shateah Wetering led the team with five assists.

We have four kids starting in new roles and that will be our biggest area of improvement over time,” Burgess said. “The only player who is doing a similar role is Elise (Boulton).”

This is very exciting,” Burgess said. “Our program will be better for the team’s dedication to selfless role acceptance.”

COMING UP – The Bravettes have another scrimmage at Solon before starting their regular season next week.
