One at a time. . . now, it’s homecoming

Southeast Warren brings the homecoming opposition for the 5-0 Montezuma Braves on Friday evening, Sept. 24 at Badger-Gabriel Field.

The Warhawks bring in a 2-2 record for this non-district contest.

The Warhawk wins were 71-0 over Seymour and 27-20 over Mormon Trail. The defeats were 32-26 to Martensdale-St. Mary’s and 48-21 to Audubon.

The Warhawks quarterback is Landon Harvey, a 6-1, 190-pound junior who is 16-28 passing, for 270 yards and four touchdowns.

Top rusher is freshman Trey Fisher (6-0, 165), with 33 carries for 284 yards and five scores.

Tops in the receiving corps: Cade Nelson, a 5-10, 145-pound senior with nine grabs for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

Braves defender Tod Geiger (78) finds the football and pursues it against Melcher-Dallas.

The top tackler has been Luke Lane, a 6-0, 170-pound senior, with 39.5 stops, including 9.0 for lost yardage.

A question I haven’t been asked yet is: How likely are the Braves to be a playoff team?

Well, I’ll give you a few facts, and you’ll be able to figure it out.

This year in Class 8, the top three finishers in each of the 10 districts are in, plus two at large teams statewide.

This Friday’s game doesn’t count in district play because the teams are in different districts. Montezuma has district dates left with Twin Cedars and Woodward Academy, (combined, they’re 0-8) and an attractive Oct. 8 game at 4-0 Baxter, which should get headlines, before and after.

Regardless who wins that one, though, expect to see both teams in the post-season.
