‘Photo op’ got Mia Boulton started

Mia Boulton got her start in journalism and photography three years ago, when Record and Montezuma Magazine photographer Ally Fillmore gave her and old camera as a Christmas present.

I was so excited to start taking photos that I took almost 400 in one day!” said Boulton, who will be an MHS sophomore this fall.

I eventually learned a few tips from various friends and resources to help me develop my skills.”

Mia is the new photographer at The Record and Montezuma Magazine. She will be helping with reporting as well, at school and community events.

Mia is a daughter of Marie and Buddy Boulton of Montezuma. She is a granddaughter of Al and Denise Rabenold of Montezuma.

Although I am just a sophomore, I am involved in many activities at the school,” Mia said, listing cross country, basketball, track, dance, FFA student council and band.

I enjoy expanding my interests in photography. My family is extremely supportive of me in all of my activities and hobbies,” she said.

Mia also is an animal lover. She has a pair of dogs.

After Boulton received her camera from Fillmore, “I began taking only portraits at first, but then progressed to taking pictures of nature and moving subjects,” she said.

Then, I began taking my camera to my siblings’ basketball tournaments and other activities. I started to take it everywhere,” Mia said. “For example, during my eighth grade cross country season, I would always grab my camera after my own race and take pictures of the high school team.”

Fillmore mentored Boulton in sports and behind the camera. Mia said she has always loved the sports coverage in The Record and is excited to continue what Fillmore did, now that Ally is moving to a teaching position in another community.

Mia says she loves reading and writing. She said she can quickly get lost in a story – either reading or writing one.

This is very fitting considering the opportunity I have with The Record,” Mia said. “I couldn’t imagine a more fitting experience to help me as a writer.”
