Picture taking shape for girls track team

MARENGO – It’s that time of the year. Warm winds are blowing, and the puzzle pieces that were the Montezuma girls track team members early on are starting to slide into place.

The Bravettes, scoring heavily in most events, won their first invitational meet championship of the spring on Monday, April 10, at Iowa Valley.

Montezuma edged North Mahaska 147 to 139 for the team title on an eight-school meet.

The weather was amazing and the girls were ready to go after a long Easter break,” said Bravettes Coach Megan Carlson.

The Bravettes got a one-two finish from Izzy Roorda and Chloe Snook in the long jump. Roorda’s leap of 15 feet, 8 inches, best Snook’s best effort by just half an inch.

Snook won the 200-meter dash, with Lily Ferry close behind in third place.

Snook also was second in the 100.

Ellen Cook won the 1,500, with Mia Boulton in at fourth.

The Bravettes ran a victory lap and posed at Iowa Valley.

Roorda and Cook went two-three in the 400-meter dash.

Carlson said several girls posted lifetime bests. “We knew that every point would matter, and the team was able to make up a deficit late in the meet.”

Bravettes Roorda, Claire Erselius, Laila Kercheval and Alivia Cline closed out the win by winning the 4×400.

Montezuma had two place finishers in a number of individual events and scored heavily in the relays.

Many girls stepped up into events they had never competed in before,” Carlson said. “Grit was a defining factor for the evening.”

This group is willing to work hard,” Carlson said, “and some of the pieces are starting to come together.”
