Pitchers rule in 4-1 BGM victory

BROOKLYN – In a sharp pitching duel, BGM’s Jacob Mauer got enough support for him to prevail over Montezuma’s Owen Cook and the Braves, 4-1, in varsity baseball action on Wednesday, June 23.

The Bears outhit the Braves 7-4, but the key stat was BGM’s six stolen bases in six attempts. The Bears put runners in scoring position, and drove some of them in.

BGM plated two first inning runs, before the Braves cut the lead in half with a run in their half of the fourth. BGM scored two more in the bottom half of the inning, and Mauer made them stand up for the win.

The first four Braves in the order, Cole Watts, Cook, Eddie Burgess and Connor Van Zee, had one hit each. But those were all of the safeties the Braves recorded.

Watts’ hit was a double. Van Zee drove in Montezuma’s lone run with a single in the fourth inning.

Mauer, Jake Moel and Shamus Keller each had two hits for BGM, and Trase Kriegel drove in a pair of runs with a hit.

The Bears also hit one double and one triple on the night.

Joe Irlbeck of BGM was three-for-three in stolen bases.

Montezuma made two errors, while BGM made none.

Cook pitched all six innings for Montezuma, yielding four runs, three of them earned. He walked three and struck out seven.

BGM went to 5-9 overall and 5-7 in SICL play.
