Putting up numbers takes time!

Eight-man high school football is a speed game.

But it’s not necessarily a fast-paced game.

Friday’s 73-32 Montezuma homecoming win over Winfield-Mt. Union took two hours and 35 minutes to play, from kickoff to final whistle.

Why? Don’t blame the halftime show, which was terrific!

But consider that the teams put up 105 points, and gained 909 yards (508 by the Braves).

Now, the second half WAS played under a continuous clock.

Still, it took a while.

All of those points means quite a few stoppages of play. And, it does take a while to pass for or grind out 909 yards.

Oh, well. It was a beautiful night to be outside, social distancing (we hope).

I mentioned Montezuma’s stats leaders in the game story. Winfield-Mt. Union got 208 yards on 15 rushes from freshman running back Cam Buffington, who also led the Wolves with 6.5 tackles.

Winfield-Mt. Union completed three of five pass attempts, for 42 yards.
