MARENGO – Finally, a decent night in which to run, and the Montezuma girls didn’t let the opportunity pass them by on Monday evening, April 11.

Using the quality of their depth, the Bravettes placed second in an eight-team field. In fact, it was a two-team race, with North Mahaska edging Montezuma 108-97 for the team title.

“The weather was perfect and Iowa Valley does an amazing job running a great meet,” said Bravettes Coach Megan Carlson.

Belle Plaine, a squad that beat the Bravettes in a recent multi-school meet, placed third with 73.

This meet is sort of an early look at what the SICL meet will be like, but without Lynnville-Sully, Colfax-Mingo and Tri-County. And there were some individuals missing. “We had 15 girls at State FFA,” Carlson said. “But even down 15, the Bravettes were able to finish second overall!” she said.

The Bravettes didn’t win an event, but placed second in several.

They also scored team points in every relay, and had two team point scorers in most individual events.

Katie Reynolds scored 18 team points and Kalynn Wanders had 11. But also valuable were the 8.5 points put up by Rebeka Teumer in three difficult races, the 400, the 1,500 and the 3,000.

A total of 17 Bravettes scored team points in this meet. “This group was unable to compete last week because of the weather, but the girls came back with several personal records and are really improving their track knowledge,” Carlson said.

“I am so proud of all the girls and I am excited to get a full roster back,” the coach said. “Hopefully, we get some great weather chances again and we can continue to improve performances.”
