BELLE PLAINE – The Bravettes qualified two girls in three events for state, but came up just short in a bid to win a regional track and field championship at the Thursday, May 13 state qualifying meet.

Montezuma was involved in the championship all the way, but wound up second with 79 points, to Alburnett’s 85.

The Bravettes qualified Katie Reynolds in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and Dylan Holland in the discus. “You hope you can compete hard enough on the final meet of the year,” said Bravettes Coach Megan Carlson. “They Bravettes did compete hard, ran several season bests, finished as runner-ups, and are sending three events to the state track meet.”

Montezuma did not win an event.

Dylan Holland gets set to qualify for state during the girls regional meet in Belle Plaine.

Reynolds placed second in the 200, in 27.51 seconds. It was a season’s best for her. Previously, it had been 27.7. She was the 14th-fastest qualifier for state.

Reynolds was third in a blanket finish in the 100. Her time was 13.52 seconds, which was off her season’s best. She was 23rd out of 24 state qualifiers. “Katie has grown a lot in the shorter sprint races and we need to stay focused to help her drop some more time at the state meet,” Carlson said.

Holland uncorked her first-ever discus throw beyond 100 feet and beat her personal record by 10 feet. She was second at 105-5, and was the 17th-best qualifier for state. Holland also grabbed a third in the shot put. “Dylan has grown so much in the field events and I am so excited for her to have this opportunity!” Carlson said.

“The sprint medley ran its second-fastest time of the season and finished fourth. The girls were only 1.3 seconds away from earning a trip to state, which is heartbreaking,” Carlson said. Sprint medley runners ere Coral Lowry, Madison Van Zee, Ash Krousie and Reynolds.

“The distance medley was another race that ran a season-best by 10 seconds,” Carlson said. “The girls ran hard, were able to finish second, and missed qualifying for state by five seconds.” Runners were Van Zee, Reynolds, Krousie and Alivia Cline.

“The 4×800 was able to have a season-best performance, but could not keep pace with Iowa Valley, that had a 25-second improvement.” Runners were Izzy Roorda, Eoise Boulton, Mia Bouldon and Alivia Cline.

“The 4×100 crew finished eighth and the 4×400 ladies were fifth. This is amazing,” Carlson said, “because freshmen make of three-fourths of each relay!”

Montezuma was a very young team, and this meet turned into a five-way dog fight involving themselves, champion Alburnett, as well as North Linn, Springville and Belle Plaine.

“We have so many amazing, hard-working, kind and fun young women on our team,” Carlson said. “I am so lucky to have had the chance to coach them this season.”

“Despite being so young, this group is deep and that showed with the tie for second place, only a few points behind the meet champions. That in itself is an accomplishment,” she said, “and this group has so much to be proud of!”
