Roadcap wins, Braves 7th of 12

NEW SHARON – Kennen Roadcap won a championship, four Braves placed in the top four in their weight class, and Montezuma’s wrestlers finished in the middle of a 12-team field Saturday, Jan. 8, at the North Mahaska Invitational.

Roadcap was the champion at 220 pounds. Brave Peter Roberts at 113 and Zach Bennett at 182 placed second, and Marty Knox was fourth at 195.

Nathan Borton placed fifth at 106.

Roadcap won on a fall, a 4-3 decision, then a 6-2 championship match decision over Brayden Swietik of Mount Ayr. Roadcap advanced his season’s record to 10-8.

Bennett stood at 19-3 after his second place finish. After a first round bye, he pinned his semifinals opponent in 19 seconds.

Bennett was pinned in 1:49 by Keaton White of Mount Ayr in the championship match.

Roberts placed second after being pinned in 1:09 by Matt German of North Mahaska in the 113-pound title bout.

Knox lost his third-place match on a fall, but his record on the season stands at 13-6.

Also competing for the Braves were Gabe Wearmouth at 160 pounds and Brett Plants at 170.

Montezuma’s wrestlers scored 75 points to place seventh in the 12-team field.
