NEW SHARON – Kennen Roadcap won the 220-pound championship and the Montezuma wrestling team fared well in a 14-school tournament that included mostly schools with larger enrollments.
The event was the North Mahaska Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Six Montezuma wrestlers competed, with five scoring points and placing in the top six of their weight divisions.
Braxton Plants at 182 got to compete for third place. He didn’t emerge victorious in that match, but fourth was a solid finish.
The Braves got fifth-place finishes from Brett Plants at 170 pounds and Marty Knox at 195.
Owen Desrochers placed sixth at 138.
Roadcap tore through the 220-pound division with two pins and a major decision.
The Montezuma senior pinned Talan Meredith of Grinnell in 5:31, then scored a fall in 1:34 over Shaaban Naim of Iowa City’s City High in the semifinals.
Roadcap won by an 11-1 major decision over Grant Wilson of Solon in the championship match.
Brett Plants at 170 pounds scored three consecutive pins in the consolation bracket to roar to his fifth-place finish.
At 195, Marty Knox also pinned three in the consos bracket to emerge with fifth place, with two of those matches not lasting even one minute.
In terms of team scoring, Montezuma put up 75.5 points – good production from a six-man team in a 14-school event. The Braves placed ninth overall. Solon won the meet with 211.5 points.
