Runners compete in emotional first meet

WILLIAMSBURG – The competition from larger schools was tough enough for Montezuma’s cross country runners Tuesday night, but they had heavier things weighing on their minds.

The Braves and Bravettes had learned about 24 hours earlier about the auto accident death of senior teammate Chloe Hutchcraft. But the family wanted the team to run, so they soldiered on.

The varsity girls got a 10th place individual run from Ellen Cook and placed seventh out of 10 scoring teams.

The Braves were 11th out of 13, with Jayden Ross in the first Montezuma runner into the chute in 44th place overall.

UP NEXT – Both Montezuma teams compete Thursday in the Pekin Invite, to be run at Wildwood Park on the southwest edge of Ottumawa.

Boys Varsity – Montezuma placed 11th of 13 teams with 314 points. Williamsburg was the team winner.

Braves places and times – 44 – Jayden Ross 21:07. 53, Jack Erselius 21:36; 73, Kohen Holland 23:36; 74, Bryson Stockman 23:43. 75, Carter McKee 23:51. 76, Jusiah Wetering 24:01.

Girls Varsity – Montezuma placed 7th out of 10 schools witth 170 points. Williamsburg was the team champion.

Bravettes places and times – 10 – Ellen Cook 23:23; 39 – Vivian Cook 27:15; 40 – Alivia Cline 27:36; 47 – Lydia Singleton 28:26. 51 – Ashlee Eilander 28:48.

JV boys place and time – 50 – Linkyn Bru 30:33.

JV girls place and time – 19, Makenna Johannes 30:33.
