WAVERLY – Dozens of teams, hundreds of runners.
And a nice day to run in a crowd.
Montezuma’s high school cross country runners competed against some of the best in the region on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Steve Johnson Invitational, hosted by Wartburg College.
High place finishes weren’t the thing here for the Bravettes, as much as packing and running as a team in a quality, high-traffic situation.
Both teams did pretty well in that regard.
Montezuma’s top four boys were within 33 seconds of each other in placing between 140th through 161st out of 217 contestants.
Gavin Strong was the highest Brave, his 20:00.68 clocking placing 140th overall. Jayden Ross was in at 141st in 20:06.82.
The boys were 27th out of 27 scoring teams.
The girls placed 14th out of 21.
Again, they packed pretty well, the top five going between 22:23.12 and 25:29.21 over the 5,000-meter distance.
Claire Erselius led the Bravettes at 63rd place, out of 178, and Ellen Cook was in at 75th.
Full high school results for Montezuma’s teams are below.
UP NEXT – Thursday, Oct. 6 is a big day for Montezuma cross country teams. That’s when they host their home meet, at Big Springs. Starting time is 4:30 p.m.
