SIGOURNEY – Montezuma scored the game’s first 16 points and went on to take a 77-55 win over Sigourney in varsity boys basketball action on Friday, Dec. 18.
Montezuma’s full court press again was effective as the Braves shot out to a 24-9 lead after one quarter. Cole Watts scored 11 points and Trey Shearer added seven in the period.
The teams had a shoot-out in a 47-point second quarter. Sigourney made four three-point baskets and scored off some dribble drive penetration.
But the Braves countered Sigourney’s 24 points with 23 of their own and led 47-33 at halftime.
Montezuma got tough again on defense in the second half, and extended its lead out to 22 points.
Trey Shearer finished with 36 points for Montezuma and Cole Watts had 23. Watts also snagged 14 rebounds and gave the Braves some real strength on the defensive boards.
Shearer had four three-point baskets and Watts sank two as Montezuma drained eight in all from behind the arc.
Masin Shearer scored eight points for the Braves and Cam Johnson had five.
Trey Shearer was 15-for-20 from the field and was able to finish at the rim consistently. He also went four-for-eight from behind the arc.
Owen Cook grabbed seven rebounds for the Braves. Masin Shearer had four assists and four steals.
Montezuma took its record to 6-1 overall, including 5-1 in South Iowa Cedar League play. Sigourney is 1-5 overall and in the league.
