That 54-14 final score – Montezuma over Lone Tree – doesn’t reveal what a war their playoff football game was in the early stages on Friday, Oct. 23, at Badger-Gabriel Field.
It was physical. It was emotional.
And . . it was COLD! The temperature was 40 degrees at kickoff, with north winds gusting to 25 miles an hour. It didn’t get any better.
After Lone Tree converted an early lost fumble by the Braves into eight points, the teams engaged in a real slobber-knocker up front.
For a while.
Montezuma wound up scoring the next 54 points, broken only by a Lone Tree score against Montezuma reserves early in the fourth quarter.
Braves quarterback Eddie Burgess threw five touchdown passes and ran for three more. Four of those scoring strikes were to Trey Shearer and one was to Cole Watts.
Montezuma initiated a continuous clock with 6:37 left in the third quarter, when a Burgess pass and two-point conversion made it 48-8.
The Braves (8-0), led 14-8 after one quarter, 28-8 at halftime, and then hit the Lions (4-4) with a 26-0 third quarter, similar to what they did to Lone Tree in the third period when the teams played two weeks ago.
UP NEXT – The Braves advance to the third round in Class 8. The boys athletic association will redraw and reseed the pods tonight, and announce next week’s schedule on Saturday afternoon.
OUR THANKS – Again, to Al Rabenold for his text messages. I don’t know how he managed to operate a small keyboard in truly abominable conditions!
COME BACK – To our website later in the weekend, for stats, quotes and more details.
