Bravettes in balanced win, 60-24
VICTOR – Montezuma scored the first 10 points and never looked back in a 60-24 win over HLV in varsity girls basketball on Tuesday evening, Dec. 8.
Montezuma’s defense sealed off the passing lanes as the Bravettes shot to a 16-2 lead midway through the first quarter. Mia Boulton hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to put the Bravettes up 25-12 at the quarter break.
Montezuma built its lead to 43-17 by halftime, and outscored the Warriors 17-7 during the second half.
“I was very proud of our spurts of gritty defense,” said Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess. “As a young team, we are working hard at trying to find a complete quarter, which then equals a complete half, and so forth.”
The Bravettes featured balanced scoring. Three girls reached double figures and a fourth was just a point away.
Mia Boulton splashed down 18 points, including four three-point baskets. She also had six steals.
Elise Boulton and Dylan Holland each scored a dozen points.
Elise also had six assists, and Holland, who went five-for-five from the field, also pulled down eight rebounds. As a team, Montezuma reeled in 40 total rebounds and came up with 20 steals.
Shanae Wetering was the fourth player nearing twin figures. She scored nine points, had four rebounds and three steals.
“We are so thankful to be competing and growing,” Burgess said.
The victory lifted Montezuma to 4-1 on the season.
HLV was 1-2 with the defeat.
