A year ago, the Montezuma Bravettes lost by 15 points to an unbeaten Grundy Center team that went all the way to the Class 2A state title game before suffering its first defeat.
That Spartans team featured an all-senior rotation. The lineup is different now, except Grundy Center can still shoot well.
The Bravettes didn’t shoot better, but put up more shots, and beat The Spartans 73-55 Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the regular season finale for the Bravettes.
The win gave Montezuma a regular season record of 20-1.
Shateah Wetering exploded for 35 points and Elise Boulton scored 14 as Montezuma had quarter leads of 21-14, 36-26 and 56-43 before closing it out with a 17-12 fourth period.
Statistically, Montezuma’s defense is the lowest-yielding in Class 1A. And it was active in this game, even though Grundy Center shot .537 from the field.
Grundy Center shot 15 fewer times. Part of that was defense and part was rebounding, where the Bravettes had a 33-17 lead.
Wetering pulled down 11 rebounds and Boulton dished seven assists.
Grundy Center is 14-8 on the season.
UP NEXT – Montezuma moves into regional play Tuesday, Feb. 18, at home, against Baxter.
