SCORES: Bravettes fall in first round, 51-46

Yes, they will keep it! Maddy McKeag holds aloft the award the Bravettes won for making it to state. (Allyson Fillmore photos).

DES MOINES – Saint Ansgar’s defense – quick out front, and entangling on the inside, carried the Saints to a 51-46 quarterfinal round win over Montezuma Wednesday in the Class 1A state girls basketball tournament.

The defeat closed a great Montezuma season at 23 wins and two losses.

Shateah Wetering led Montezuma with 22 points in her final game as a Bravette.

Montezuma had trouble sustaining rhythm on offense. The Bravettes shot just 31 percent from the field, including eight-for-27 (.300) from three-point range.

Saint Ansgar (22-2), shot 42 percent from the field. The Saints are not a three-point shooting team, but they went 15-for-17 (.890) after shooting just .589 on free throws for the season before this contest.

The Bravettes led 32-29 through three quarters, but were outscored 22-14 in the fourth. Saint Ansgar went 10-for-12 from the line in the fourth quarter as it protected and extended its lead.

Elise Boulton scored nine points for Montezuma, as did Shelby Conger.

Gracie Urbatsch scored 15 for Saint Ansgar, while Hali Anderson, a demon on defense, and Brooklyn Hackbarth, maybe the best rebounder in Class 1A, put in 13 each.

Come back here later for more details, stats and quotes.
