Girls take down 3A Williamsburg, 59-45

WILLIAMSBURG – Diligent defensive pressure by the Bravettes, along with timely shooting, pushed Montezuma to a 59-45 varsity basketball victory over Class 3A Williamsburg on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19.

The Bravettes led start to finish and had answers when the Raiders made one of several runs they had during the game.

Montezuma led 13-6 after one quarter, 31-24 at halftime and 43-27 through three periods.

The Bravettes pulled away with a 16-8 fourth quarter.

When you’re a Class 1A team playing up in class, you can expect the game to be physical. One thing the Bravettes did especially well was take care of the basketball, with just four turnovers, on our chart, compared to 17 by the Raiders.

Williamsburg paid special defensive attention to Montezuma’s strong outside shooting guards, Elise Boulton and Mia Boulton.

But stepping up big time for the Bravettes were forward Shanae Wetering and post Dylan Holland.

Wetering dropped in a trio of three-point baskets in the second half on her way to 21 points on the game. She had an outstanding overall night, shooting eight-for-11 from the field, including five-for-six from behind the arc. She also had six rebounds and five steals.

Holland scored 15 points and had eight rebounds. Elise Boulton had a tough shooting night, but the rest of her game was still going as she had four assists, two steals and two rebounds. Mia Boulton connected on two treys and scored eight points while running down six rebounds.

The Bravettes rode their press to a 20-9 second quarter lead, but then the Raiders regrouped, especially on defense. Montezuma didn’t shoot well from outside from time to time, but generated enough offense in transition to keep its lead.

Montezuma’s half-court defense was tough, with the Bravettes spending some time face-guarding guard Charlotte Wetjen, a 15.5-point average scorer.

Montezuma splashed down 10 three-point baskets on the night, most of them coming at key moments.

The Bravettes moved their overall record to 8-1.

Williamsburg is at 3-4.
