Girls sharpen their cutting edge, 55-6

COLFAX – Voom-pa!! Voom-pa!

What, mom? That sound? Oh that’s just us girls, out here sharpening our saw!”

That means the Montezuma Bravettes were working on technique, or their ‘brand,’ as Coach Janel Burgess puts it.

Montezuma’s performance was methodical, and at times very precise as the Bravettes beat Colfax-Mingo 55-6 in varsity girls basketball action Friday night, Dec. 4.

No, I didn’t leave out a digit. Six (6) is all Colfax-Mingo was able to score.

Montezuma used a variety of defenses. All worked. The Bravettes held the Tigerhawks to five points through three quarters. Burgess cleared her bench in the fourth period and the Bravettes yielded just one more point.

Elise Boulton led Montezuma scorers with 17 points and Dylan Holland, who positioned well on the inside, scored 14. Shanae Wetering had her best scoring game of the season with nine.

Kierstyn Price spreads her wings on defense out front. (Submitted).

Wetering added eight rebounds and five steals to an impressive game.

Holland added a team-high nine rebounds to her 14 points.

Elise Boulton added five assists to her season total, which leads the state, all classes, in the early going. She also is the third-leading scorer.

Jadyn Sharer found her three-point shot. She made one, and scored six points, as more Montezuma players are starting to work into the offensive scheme.

Montezuma led 16-2 after one quarter, 34-5 at halftime, and 48-5 after pitching a shutout in the third.

The Bravettes helped to create 28 Tigerhawk turnovers, while making 14 themselves.

The Bravettes lifted their record to 3-1. Colfax-Mingo is 0-3.

UP NEXT – Montezuma is at HLV for a girls/boys doubleheader on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
