BELLE PLAINE – Sometimes the journey is as memorable as the destination.

The volleyball Bravettes were preparing to play Belle Plaine in the championship match of the South Iowa Cedar League tournament on Thursday evening, Oct. 15.

But how Montezuma got there was an adventure story.

It took the Bravettes five sets to get past a hot HLV team that had won seven of its previous eight matches entering Thursday’s semifnals.

Montezuma won set one 25-20 and jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the second set.

But then, HLV put things together and held them that way for a while. The Warriors won set two 27-25, and the third set, 25-20.

But the Bravettes sent it to a tiebreaker with a do-or-die 25-20 win in the fourth set. Then, Montezuma prevailed.

HLV stands at 12-9 after the defeat. The Bravettes were at 12-5.

Montezuma was playing 22-8 Belle Plaine in the championship match. The Plainsmen beat Colfax-Mingo 3-0 in the evening’s first match.
