Scouts learn sewing from volunteers

There are many new experiences, learning and fun happening for the eight members of the Montezuma Girl Scout Troop.

The most recent educational activity centered on learning basic sewing skills. It was hands-on with the volunteer help of several skilled adult seamstresses in the community.

Volunteer Mary Hines and Girl Scout Haven Kinzebach interrupt Haven’s pressing of a seam to pose for a photo.

The adults brought their sewing machines to the United Methodist church fellowship hall on Monday, March 28.

KayLynn Osborn and Jessica Townsend are the troop leaders. The troop meets the last Monday of the month at the Methodist church.

Osborn reported, “Recently we learned about greenhouse gases and climate change. We spent the meeting constructing greenhouse gas molecules and talking about our carbon footprint.”

She added, “We are just finishing up cookie sales and currently have collected donations to purchase 73 boxes of cookies for local teachers.”

Young Girl Scout Abigail (‘Abby’) Bradshaw practices an ironing skill under the supervision of Jane Ahrens.

Osborn said, “Upcoming plans include a spring-themed meeting and touring and volunteering at the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter.” The troop will have its second annual family camp-out this summer.

Girl Scout Aubrie Townsend and adult volunteer Vickie Thomas work together as Aubrie learns a sewing technique.
