Season ends at BGM for Braves wrestlers

BROOKLYN – Montezuma freshman Kennen Roadcap got a chance to wrestle for second place and a trip to the state meet during Saturday’s Class 1A District 4 sectional meet.

However, the season came to and end in Brooklyn for all three of the Braves’ contestants.

Roadcap, at 285 pounds, pinned third-seed Brice Taylor of BGM in 1:23 of their wrestlebacks semifinal match.

But in the match for second, Trace Goemaat of North Mahaska pinned Roadcap in 43 seconds.

Roadcap finished the season with a record of 15-17 at 285, which is a particularly tough weight at the varsity level for younger wrestlers.

Braves 220-pounder Chance Gillum won his first-round match on a 15-second pin, but then was pinned in the semfinals by top seed Ethan Allie of Belle Plaine. Gillum was defeated again in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Gillum closed his senior season with a record of 10-20.

Montezuma junior and first-year wrestler Brian Diaz at 170, was not able to win a match.

Diaz finished the year at 10-20.

In order to advance to Saturday’s District meet at English Valleys, wrestlers had to finish first or second in their weight class.

Roadcap had a first-round bye.
