Last basketball season had a fantastic ending for Montezuma brothers Trey and Masin Shearer.

They were starting guards on the Braves’ Class 1A state champion team.

This season had a memorable ending for them, too. Both had their seasons ended by broken bones.

Trey, a college freshman suffered a broken collarbone while playing in a game for Truman State University.

Masin, a high school junior, suffered a broken foot late in the Braves’ second game against North Mahaska.

Trey’s injury happened Feb. 12 in a Truman State game against Illinois Springfield.

Trey was diving for a loose ball late in the first half and sustained the season-ending injury.

Trey had moved up to a starting guard position and was making his sixth start. In 23 total games, he averaged 3.7 points and had 37 total assists.

Masin suffered his injury late in Montezuma’s win over North Mahaska on Feb. 12. He has been on crutches and in a boot since. Coach Derrick Dengler said the boot will remain on for a few more weeks.

Masin was averaging 14.1 points, on .378 overall field goal shooting, including .292 from behind the three-point arc.

Masin also was averaging 4.5 assists per contest.
