Shearers leave L-S Hawks seeing double

Going on three years now, Montezuma boys basketball opponents have had the nightmare of defending against one guy named Shearer.

And Trey’s pace left most of them seeing double.

Going forward, there really are two guys named Shearer for opponents to worry about.

Freshman Masin Shearer has established himself as another force to contend with after just five varsity games.

Tuesday night, Dec. 17, he poured in 24 points to lead a 77-40 Braves home win over Lynnville-Sully.

Junior Trey Shearer scored 21.

Before we go on, it should be emphasized this happened because of team execution.

The Braves led 30-3 after one quarter, and 57-20 at halftime.

We played really well defensively in the first half,” said Braves Coach Derrick Dengler. “We were solid, playing with our feet. We contested their jump shots. Usually, we limited them to one shot. Then, we scored in transition, but it was the defense that sparked it.”

Masin Shearer hit nine-of-10 shots from the field, which included six-for-six from behind the arc.

The Braves were 33-for-52 overall, which is a .640 shooting percentage. That included 11-for-22 (.500) on three-pointers.

Trey Shearer, honored before the game for having scored his 1,000th career point, was 10-for-13 from the field, dished seven assists, grabbed 11 rebounds, and had time for a steal, a deflection and a blocked shot.

Our focus going forward will be to defend and rebound. If we do those things well, it will lead to offense,” Dengler said.

Cole Watts scored 12 points and did it with five-for-10 shooting. He also had eight rebounds.

Eddie Burgess scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.

Brayden Arendt had five points, a steal, a deflection, and splashed down one of the Braves’ treys.

Montezuma limited the Hawks (1-5) to .341 field goal shooting on 14-for-41.

Offensively, a lot of our guys were good at attacking the paint, but under control,” Dengler said. “That led to some great kick-outs. That was good to see, because those have been focus areas for us.”

The Braves led 73-31 through three quarters on the way to upping their record to 5-0.
