SIGOURNEY – Court coverage – as in great defense – was the story in Sigourney’s 3-1 win over Montezuma in the pool play round of the SICL volleyball tournament on Monday, Oct. 14.
The Savages had 106 digs in the four-set match – to Montezuma’s 53.
A dig is when the defensive team keeps an attack, serve or tap by the offense airborne, allowing the defensive team to set up its offense.
It takes foot speed, hand-eye coordination and anticipation of where the ball is going to land.
Scores for Sigourney were 25-22, 23-25 and then 25-11 and 25-11.
Syd Burgess had 17 kills and five blocks for the Bravettes.
Chloe Snook had 15 assists.
Lauryn Larmore had 19 digs. Burgess was 11-for-11 serving, with one ace. Ava Pargeon was 11-14, with one ace.
Sigourney upped its season record at 15-4 and sends the Savages into Thursday’s championship round.
The Bravettes fell to 11-13, and they’ll play in Thursday’s consolation round at Iowa Valley in Marengo.
Thursday’s schedule includes Iowa Valley vs. Keota at 5 p.m., and Montezuma against English Valleys after that.
The two winners will play each other to close out the night.
The first two rounds will be best two out of three. The final will be best three-out of five.
