SIGOURNEY – It was a night of hard competition against one of the SICL’s stronger teams.
It was also a night of frustration for the Bravettes who couldn’t seem to get any lasting momentum against Sigourney and fell 3-0 in the first round of regional volleyball play.
Scores were 22-25, 18-25 and 18-25.
The Bravettes closed the books on a 9-17 season, which saw them surge late by winning three of four matches in last week’s SICL tournament.
These teams appeared well-matched. Montezuma led in three categories of individual stats and Sigourney in two. But those two may have been decisive.
The Bravettes, not always the superior hitting team in their matches, led 30 to 23 in kills in this one. Senior Izzy Roorda has 11 and freshman Sydnee Burgess had 8.
The Bravettes led 28-20 in assists, with sophomore Chloe Snook dishing up 20.
The Bravettes were playing defense, too, and led 72-59 in digs. Laila Kercheval had 21 digs, Burgess had 15, and Roorda had 12.
But Sigourney may have gotten the edge with its serving and defense at the net.
The Savages had 11 blocks to Montezuma’s 3.
In serving, Sigourney was 63-for-67 (94%) with 7 aces. Montezuma was 51-for-56 (91%) with 3 aces.
Added up: It was a Sigourney victory and another big effort by the Bravettes.
Sigourney moved on with a 16-8 record.
