How about this: The Montezuma boys opened their baseball post-season with a win, and the softball girls did the same on Monday, July 8.
The girls beat Melcher-Dallas 8-1, scoring 7 of their 8 runs in consecutive innings in the middle of the game.
The Bravettes, now 11-11, will play 21-6 Murray on Thursday, July 10, at 5 p.m. in Pleasantville.
Murray was a 24-0 winner over East Union (4-22) on Monday.
The Bravettes blended strong hitting, good defense and got another good pitching effort from rapidly-emerging freshman Syd Burgess.
Seven Bravettes combined for 12 hits.
Mya Smothers had three of those, including a triple, a double and a run batted in.
Chloe Snook had two hits and stole a base.
Vivian Cook and Izzy Roorda had two hits each.
Ellen Cook had one hit, a triple that chased home two runs.
Madison Van Zee had one hit and drove in a run.
Kam Schmidt had one hit.
The Bravettes made a modest three errors, one of which led to an unearned run for Burgess.
Burgess pitched all 7 innings. She allowed 4 hits, and one run, which was unearned. She had great control, an aspect of her game that has really improved since she stepped in for the injured Leah Urfer. Burgess walked just one and struck out four.
Montezuma moves on with an 11-11 record.
Melcher-Dallas ended its season at 8-22.
