Some progress, but both teams fall

The ever-optimistic Bravettes were trying to keep the line moving at North Mahaska.

VICTOR – Once again, both Montezuma varsity ball teams did some things well, but couldn’t cash in at the pay window on Wednesday evening, June 1.

In softball, the Bravettes took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning, but a seven-run HLV fifth carried the home team to a 9-4 victory.

Madison Van Zee had two hits, drove in a run, and scored a run for the Bravettes.

Kallie Robison hit a two-run double for Montezuma and also plated a run.

Robison pitched six innings, giving up 10 hits. She struck out seven.

Montezuma again played improved defense, which included limiting the oppositions running game.

On offense, execution was sharp, with bunts used several times to advance runners.

HLV went to 3-2 with the win. The Bravettes are 1-4.

In baseball, the Braves took a big bite out of the opponent’s run production, but still suffered a 4-0 defeat. The Braves allowed just five stolen bases and made six errors – but those are modest improvements.

Owen Cook went 2×3 at the plate for the Braves.

Colton Benson pitched seven innings, allowing just six singles.

HLV scored a run in the first inning and three in the fourth.

Sophomore Max Henstorf shut out the Braves on four hits, with 10 strikeouts in seven innings on the hill.

HLV went to 3-2 with the win. Montezuma is 0-5.

UP NEXT – The softball team hosts BCLUW on Thursday, June 2. Both teams host Lynnville-Sully on Friday, June 3.
