MARENGO – Montezuma girls track Coach Megan Carlson wasn’t sure how her team would perform Monday evening, April 12, at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational meet.
“Coming in the Monday after prom, you never know what to expect,” Carlson said.
“We focused on running a few quality events, getting everyone an event, and just having fun.”
And, it’s really fun when you win. The Bravettes did that, outscoring North Mahaska 123 to 104 for their third major team victory of the season.
“Trying to win the meet overall was not the primary objective,” Carlson said. “But, the Bravettes were deep and good enough to do that, too!”
Montezuma won four events, placed second in four – three of them relays. They had two place finishes in three individual events, all three showcasing their depth in middle- and long-distance events.
Elise Boulton won the 3,000-meter run in 12:11.61 and the 800 in 2:50.09.
Katie Reynolds won the 100-meter dash in 13.42 seconds, and Mia Boulton won the 1,500 run in 5:54.80.
Alivia Cline was second in the 400.
Second-place relays were the distance medley (Laila Kercheval, Allyson Larmore, Mia Boulton and Madison Van Zee), the 4×200 (Dylan Holland, Madison Johannes, Ash Krousie and Reynolds), and the 4×100 (Van Zee, Krousie, Holland and Reynolds).
“The girls did a solid job of competing for points in events,” Carlson said. “As we approach the conference meet, we need to continue with a ‘fight for fourth, get it, then find third place’ mentality,” she said.
“All of the little points add up in the end, and will help the girls to continue to be successful throughout the season,” Carlson said.
NEXT UP – Montezuma is at the Girls Mustang Relays on Thursday, April 15, at East Marshall. “We will face several large schools, but it should be another chance to improve for the rest of the season,” Carlson said.
