Steady Henning gets 23rd in state 800

DES MOINES – Montezuma senior Brydon Henning ran just off his season’s best and finished 23rd out of 24 qualifiers in the Class 1A state track meet.

Henning’s time was 2:08.15 at the Saturday afternoon, May 22 session at Drake Stadium.

Henning’s previous best was 2:07.88, which is what he ran last week in the state qualifying meet.

Henning was the 24th qualifier at state. He moved up one spot in the final standings when another runner false started and was disqualified.

Henning was a cross country standout for the Braves, in addition to being the primary scorer on the track team.

On January 11, Brydon signed his National Letter of Intent to run cross country and track at Dakota Wesleyan University, an NAIA college located in Mitchell, South Dakota.

In his career at MHS Brydon earned two All-SICL first team nominations, finished as high as third in the conference individually, and leaves Montezuma with the third-fastest boys 5K time (18:14) in the last 20 years.

Additionally, Brydon graduates with top times on 8 different courses that the Montezuma team competed in.

Brydon’s senior leadership helped spur the 2020 boys cross country team to a runner-up conference finish, and fifth-place state qualifying meet finish, the strongest placings in the last 30 years of school history.
