Stingy defense keys 64-32 girls win

Montezuma’s defense was all that was really needed to subdue Colfax-Mingo – but the offense helped, too – in a 64-32 home win by the Bravettes on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

The Bravettes got out to an 18-5 first quarter lead, and locked in a tight half-court defense, mixed in with some full court pressure.

Five different Bravettes splashed down a total of six three-pointers in the first half. For a while, though, it looked like Montezuma was intent on assisting every basket. Sometimes the Bravettes made one pass too many. Other times, they missed open shots.

Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter and the Bravettes went off with a 29-16 halftime lead.

But Montezuma’s offense became more fluid after intermission. The Bravettes took the ball down low to post forward Shanae Wetering, and if she didn’t take the ball to the basket herself, other Bravettes were free to do so and did.

Wetering ended wih 18 points, getting 10 in the second half. Guard Mia Boulton scored 14, and so did freshman point guard Ellen Cook, who put down 11 of them in the second half.

The Bravettes worked on half-court sets on offense after expanding their lead to 50-26 through three periods with a 21-10 third quarter.

The Bravettes outscored the Tigerhawks 35-16 during the second half.

Cook added 6 rebounds to her 14 points, and Boulton dished 5 assists to go with her 14.

Montezuma took its record to 14-2 overall, and 12-1 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Colfax-Mingo is 5-9 and 4-8.

UP NEXT – Montezuma’s boys host Albia in a JV/varsity doubleheader on Thursday. Both teams are at BGM on Friday.
