Things were going reasonably well, then . . .

Montezuma’s baseball team took a 1-0 lead into the third inning against Colfax-Mingo and things looked promising for the Braves.

Even with a 4-1 Colfax-Mingo lead after five, the Braves were still in there.

Then came the sixth and a 14-run Tigerhawks inning.

Colfax-Mingo wound up winning 18-1 on Friday evening, May 27, in Montezuma’s home opener.

One area the Braves improved on was controlling the opposition’s running game. Montezuma allowed just six stolen bases, after yielding double figures totals in its previous games.

But the Braves still have work to do on the defensive end. They were guilty of nine errors.

The Tigerhawks outhit Montezuma 11-2, and drew 10 walks from Braves pitching.

Owen Cook pitched the first four and two-thirds innings for the Braves. He struck out eight batters.

Cook had a hit for the Braves, stole a base, and scored after Cruz De Jong put the ball in play and drove him in.

Cole Bracewell was the man for Colfax-Mingo. He went 4×4 at the plate, hit a double and drove in six runs. He also pitched five innings and struck out 11 Montezuma batters.

Colfax-Mingo went to 2-0 on the season, while Montezuma fell to 0-3.

UP NEXT – The Braves are at North Mahaska on Tuesday, May 31.
