DES MOINES — Three Montezuma football players – Owen Cook, Masin Shearer, and Garrett Watts – have been chosen to The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association and the Iowa Football Coaches Association 2022 all-state football teams.
Cook was selected to the first team as a kicker. Shearer was chosen as a wide receiver and tight end. Watts was a second team choice at wide receiver and tight end.
Cook finished his career as with the second-highest number of point after kicks in the history of Iowa Class 8 football. This year, he was 52-66 on PATs.
He kicked off 99 times, with 70 touchbacks and 4,470 total yards. He was five-for-9 on field goals, with the longest being 46 yards. He punted 25 times for 861 yards, a 34.4 average.
Owen was quite the quarterback, too. He passed for 2,557 yards this season, on 167 completions in 296 throws, a .564 average, and 47 touchdowns. He had just nine interceptons. His quarterback rating was 129.0.
Cook also rushed 143 times for 390 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Masin Shearer became an outstanding control receiver for the Braves, averaging 11.4 yards on 79 receptions – 904 total yards. He had 16 touchdowns. He also was a threat as a kick returner and defensive back.
Watts, a junior, was the Braves’ deep threat. Fhe caught 52 passes for 1,163 yards and 22 touchdowns. He averaged 22.4 yards per catch.
Dozens of sports writers and coaches from across the state met either in-person at Dowling Catholic High School or over Zoom to select this year’s teams.
Team captains were selected in each of the seven Iowa high school football classes. Captains must be a senior and selected to the first all-state team and are voted on by sports writers in each class.
The captains in each class were Cael Ortmann of Remsen St. Mary’s (8-man); Patrick Brown III of Grundy Center (Class A); Nolan Delong of Durant (Class 1A); Zach Lutmer of CLGLR (Class 2A); Aidan Hall of Harlan (Class 3A); Braylon Kammrad of Lewis Center (Class 4A); and Abu Sama of Southeast Polk (Class 5A).
The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association was founded in February 2018 to carry on the tradition of newspapers selecting all-state teams for Iowa high school sports.
This year, all-state is comprised of two teams per class, instead of three.
