Thanksgiving means it’s time for the high school football all-state teams to come out.
Three Braves – quarterback Eddie Burgess and receivers Trey Shearer and Cole Watts – have been named to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association teams.
Burgess and Shearer were on the Class 8 first team, while Watts was a second team choice. Three teams are named per class.
Burgess was in on 89 touchdowns in leading the Braves to the semifinals and a 10-1 record.
He connected on 207 of 323 pass attempts (.641), for 3,803 yards and 59 touchdowns. He threw just eight interceptions, and had a quarterback pass efficiency rating of 163.0.
Eddie rushed 145 times for 1,148 yards and 28 touchdowns.
The 6-4, 220-pounder was the Braves’ top tackler with 91 stops, including 13.0 tackles for loss.
Burgess returned five kickoffs, two for touchdowns, including one covering 72 yards. He ran eight two-point conversions.
Shearer caught 99 passes for 1,636 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also rushed 21 times for 131 yards and two more touchdowns.
Trey had 24.5 tackles and intercepted two passes. He returned seven kickoffs for 88 yards and one score, and seven punts for 92 yards.
Watts had 60 catches for 1,414 yards – 23.6 per catch – and 19 touchdowns.
Cole made 61.5 tackles, including 2.5 for lost yardage and intercepted seven passes.
