VICTOR – Three of the six competing Montezuma High School wrestlers made it to the medals stand (top 6) in their weight class at the the SICL tournament on Saturday, Jan. 27.
The three were:
Brett Plants, second at 190 pounds;
Braxton Plants, third at 215 pounds;
Isaac Wedgewood, fifth at 285 pounds.
Brett Plants pinned two opponents on his way to the 190-pound title bout, where he lost on a fall.
Braxton Plants lost 4-3 in the semifinals to the eventual second place winner. He then stormed through the wrestlebacks to get third with a 3-1 record on the day.
Wedgewood had a 1-2 record, but won his last one, the fifth-place match.
Montezuma’s other three wrestlers each had 0-2 records and did not place. They included Evan Haughey at 165 pounds, Conner Smith at 126 and Beau Young at 132.
The wrestlers now go on to post-season meets starting next week as they seek to make it to Des Moines for State.
As a team, the Braves were 10th out of 10 squads, with 41.5 points. Iowa Valley won the SICL team championship with 172 points.
