COLFAX – What color could you use to illustrate the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks in their volleyball match against Montezuma?
We’re not sure you’ll find a color in the box called “relentless,” but if you do, that’s the one.
Colfax-Mingo got high marks in just about every category in a 3-0 run past the Bravettes on Thursday evening, Sept. 22.
Scores were 25-16, 25-14 and 25-9.
Coming in, this looked like it could be a match. Colfax-Mingo was 5-8 overall, and 0-3 in South Iowa Cedar League play.
Montezuma was 7-9 and 2-1, fresh off a four-set win over Lynnville-Sully on Monday.
Volleyball is usually a sport of changing momentum, but there wasn’t much of that in this one.
The Tigerhawks served with deadly accuracy, often forcing Bravettes defenders to chase the ball before digging or passing it.
Colfax-Mingo controlled the net, with excellent passing, followed by attacking that kept Montezuma scrambling.
The Bravettes did have some moments, some of them in the first set. After falling behind 18-5, they scored three straight points and outscored their hosts 11-7 to close out the set. But Montezuma couldn’t sustain that level of play.
The Tigerhawks anticipated, moved their feet, and kept their arms flailing at the volleyball. Relentless effort on their part caused some of their many attacks and strong serves to fall in.
The Bravettes did put up 39 match points (to 75 by Colfax-Mingo), which means they did some positive things.
Their first set run included some good sets and some strong attacks, most of them delivered cross-court.
But the Bravettes had numerous attacks and serves during the match that failed to stay in bounds.
League play regular season records don’t count directly toward the conference championship, but they will impact the seeding for the league tournament, which does decide the title.
