Two district toughies tangle for title!

Are you ready for some championship football?

If so, be at Badger-Gabriel Field on Friday night, Oct. 4, when 5-0 Belle Plaine tangles with 5-1 Montezuma for the district Class 8 championship.

Three teams from each district qualify for the playoffs, and this game will take care of the top two spots.

Belle Plaine is ranked ninth in the Associated Press poll, which doesn’t have Montezuma in the top 10.

But the Braves are #4 in the BCMoore Rankings standings, while Belle Plaine is in at 15th.

Montezuma started the season at #25 in the BCMoore rankings but has been climbing steadily.

The Plainsmen have a small (20) published roster, but have been finding ways to win – usually decisvely. And, usually, by running the football.

Ty Alcott, one of two Plainsmen quarterbacks, is the leading passer – barely – with 7 completions in 18 attempts, good for 147 yards and two scores.

Alcott, 5-10 and 190 pounds, is the leading rusher at 634 yards on 83 carries, with 12 touchdowns.

Sam DeMeulanaere, 6-4 and 175, leads the receivers with 9 catches for 249 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Leading tackler is 5-7, 170-pound Wade Sankot, with 37.5 stops, one sack and 6.5 tackles for loss.

Montezuma scores 62.5 points per game, fourth best in the class. The Braves yield 16.5 points a contest, ninth best.

Belle Plaine scores 56.4 per game, eighth-best. Defensive yield is 19.2 per outing, 13th-best.

Belle Plaine gets it done.

So do the Braves.

BCMoore thinks maybe the Braves do it better, and have made Montezuma a 19-point favorite.

So . . . get on up to Badger-Gabriel and see for yourself!
