Two guys named Plants head to state!

COLFAX – Montezuma’s wrestling Plants brothers, Braxton and Brett, are headed to the state individual tournament in Des Moines Feb. 19-22, after their place finishes in the Class 1A District 1 tournament in Colfax on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Braxton was the district champion at 215 pounds.

Brett placed second at 190 pounds.

Only the top two in each weight class advanced.

Two Braves placed third in their weight class and one finished fourth.

As a team, Montezuma was sixth out of ten teams with 84.5 points.

Wesley Ross was third at 113 pounds and Ethan Desrochers was third at 132.

Rett Pargeon brought home a fourth-place finish at 144 pounds.

Braxton Plants roared to the 215 pound championship. He pinned Jacob Walerius of Lisbon in 4:37 in the finals.

Brett Plants made it to the championship bout, but lost 3-2 on the ultimate tie-breaker rule. When the wrestlers are tied after regulation time expires, they wrestle two 30-second periods. If they’re still tied, they go one more 30-second period.

In his bout for second place, Brett scored a 17-1 technical fall over Jacob Walerius of Lisbon.

Wesley Ross pinned Hunter Henry of Belle Plaine in 5:07 to earn a third-place medal at 113.

At 132, Ethan Desrochers scored a 5-3 decision over Garter Gadberry of Lisbon to earn third place.

At 144, Pargeon was defeated 14-1 by Landyn Ankrum of HLV in the third-place bout.

Competing, but not earning place finishes for Montezuma, were Cael Cheney at 120 pounds, Wylie Walters at 126, Yudiel Gonzalez at 150 And Evan Haughey at 157.
