Varsity girls win 11th game, 54-38

Go play in the snow!

MARENGO – Playing well on both sides of the ball, the varsity Bravettes shot down another good-record team from the east side of the South Iowa Cedar League on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The Bravettes were 54-38 winners over Iowa Valley.

We did have a very solid game from beginning to end,” Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess said. “We are seeing this team begin to build a special chemistry that allows the ball to flow very smoothly on offense.”

Each young lady is owning their role and that is allowing each player to be their best,” the coach said.

The victory lifted the Bravettes to 11-2 overall and to 9-1 in the SICL.

Iowa Valley fell to 9-3 and 6-3.

Scoring was balanced for the Bravettes, with Mia Boulton and Madison Johannes each scoring 13 points, while Shanae Wetering and Ellen Cook each had nine.

Johannes was three-for-three from behind the arc, and the Bravettes were eight-for-17 from back there. Montezuma shot .477 from the field overall.

Shanae Wetering pulled down nine rebounds and dished four assists.

Johannes added five rebounds.

Our defense is still a work in progress at times, but we are working hard to make adjustments as needed,” Burgess said.

Playing on the road against a good Iowa Valley team and playing though a LOT of foul trouble with confidence was so awesome,” the coach said. Montezuma was whistled for 25 fouls. Boulton fouled out and two others had four fouls each.

We are growing and we have so far to go, but the hard work our young ladies are putting in is paying off,” Burgess said.

FRIDAY’S GAMES at Tri-County have been postponed in anticipation of a snowstorm. The games have been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 3.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes are at HLV on Tuesday, Jan. Jan. 18.
