Varsity grid schedule now includes 9 games

Montezuma’s varsity football schedule for 2023 has been updated, and upgraded!

Perhaps the major news is the addition of Winfield-Mt. Union to the slate.

That will fill a scheduled open date on Saturday, Sept. 16, at home. Yes, I wrote Saturday. It will be a matinee game with a scheduled 3 p.m. kickoff.

Winfield-Mt. Union is forecast to be a top-five team in Class 8 by some coaches and prognosticators.

The other update is the Week 0 game, on Friday, Aug. 18, with HLV/Tri-County.

HLV and Tri-County have merged programs, although the HLV coach isn’t sure right now how many players that will add to the combined roster.

HLV and Tri-County came together because they were the only two schools in their areas that could merge their programs and not be taken over the Class 8 enrollment limit. Tri-County finished last season with about 10 players.

Here’s the Braves’ updated schedule:

Fri., Aug. 18 – HLV/Tri-County, 7 p.m.
Fri., Aug. 25 – Southeast Warren, 7 p.m.
Fri., Sept 1 – at Moravia, 7 p.m.
Fri., Sept. 8 – at Melcher-Dallas
Sat., Sept. 16 – Winfield-Mt. Union, 3 p.m.
Fri., Sept. 22 – BGM, 7 p.m.
Fri., Sept. 29 – at Belle Plaine, 7 p.m.
Fri., Oct. 6 – at Baxter
