VB coach reflects and looks ahead

Montezuma volleyball Coach and Activities Director Tim Burgess reflected on the just-completed season after the Bravettes were defeated by Belle Plaine on Monday, Oct. 26:

By Tim Burgess
Head Volleyball Coach

On my drive home, I had a unique wave of various emotions.

First, the challenges these young women dealt with and overcame was heartwarming and filled me with pride.

They faced an in-season coaching change and the constant threat of COVID looming, but they persevered through it all.

They did what many need to follow.

You control the things you can. You show up every day and you go to work.

You keep things, both the good and the bad in perspective, and you appreciate the chance to compete.

Every experience we have in life is an opportunity to grow, to better oneself. I believe these young women did that.

Sure, a 14-7 overall record, and 10-1 conference record and second place in the conference are all good things to hang your hat on for a season. It was clearly a successful one. However, the greatest success may very well have been the life lessons they learned.

We clearly didn’t play our best game of the year against Belle Plaine. I would be lying if I said I knew why. I am proud of the girls’ preparation and focus heading into the match. I am proud of the growth they displayed as the season came to a close.

Sometimes, there may just not be a true reason or one you can put your finger on. I am proud of the way we competed all season long.

I hope the Bravettes take away from this season a passion for the sport they love. I hope they have the desire to put in the extra time needed to be a great program. I hope they appreciate the time they got to spend as a program and a team. I hope they know how lucky they are they got to compete at all.

I am proud of all the young women in this volleyball program. I enjoyed watching them play and grow this season. Thank you for your efforts and please carry the lesson learned over into your next experience in life.

Thank you to all the parents, fans and those who helped throughout this season. Your support and help is appreciated by all. Proceed, Bravettes, to your next adventure and be the best version of yourself in all you do.
