Warhawks edge Braves in a thriller

NEW SHARON – In a game that went down to the last pitch, North Mahaska pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Montezuma, 3-2, in varsity baseball action on Monday, June 28.

The Braves scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Warhawks pitchers Blake Readshaw and Jaydyn Steil shut them out the rest of the way.

Montezuma kept a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, when North Mahaska tied it.

North Mahaska had a 6-4 edge in hits, but Montezuma made seven errors and some impacted scoring.

Neither Braves starter Cole Watts or reliever Owen Cook was charged with an earned run.

Connor Van Zee hit an RBI-double in the two-run Montezuma first inning.

Other hits in the game were by Cole Watts, Cam Johnson and Garrett Watts.

Johnson had a stolen base for the Braves.

Watts threw 7.2 innings, giving up five runs and two unearned runs. He walked three and struck out seven.

Cook pitched an inning, allowing one hit and an unearned run. He struck out one hitter.

Readshaw pitched eight innings, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out 13.

Steil picked up the win after pitching the ninth. He yielded one hit and struck out one.

The loss dropped Montezuma to 9-5 overall and 8-5 in league play.

North Mahaska is 14-5 and 10-4.
