Weather, Braves warming to the task

Jayden Ross will be a leader in the Braves distance races.

EDDYVILLE – It was a nice weather day, the competition was good, and Montezuma boys track Coach John Beck was happy.

I was very pleased with how the guys competed,” Beck said. “We hit several season bests and a few personal bests.”

The Braves placed second to Lynnville-Sully in the Class B division of the Rocket Relays.

Lynnville-Sully dominated the relays and field events to pile up 202 points, to 167 by the second-place Braves.

Kenny Criswell won the 100-meter dash for Montezuma.

Carter McKee and Jusiah Wetering went one-two in the 3,200, as did Garrett Watts (16.28) and Damien Knox (16.74) in the 110-meter high hurdles.

The high hurdling crew of Watts, Knox, Bryson Stockman and Criswell won the 4×110 shuttle in 1:08.05.

The shuttle hurdle and the 4×100 relays both hit season-best times,” Beck said. “The 4×800 and the 4×400 also ran very well, hitting near season-bests,” the coach said.

Individually, David Rose hit a personal best with his 55.11 (third place) in the 400, Beck said.

Jack Erselius had a personal best in the 200, Garrett Watts in the 110 highs and Lucas Flaig in the discus,” said the coach.

The whole 1,600 crew of Jayden Ross, Colton Benson and Carter McKee ran season-best or personal record times,” Beck said.

There were multiple other split times guys ran that were season- or career-bests,” Beck said.

A determined David Rose bursts from the starting blocks.

Montezuma’s coach said he likes the way things are developing for his squad.

The guys are putting in a lot of good work and the times are starting to drop like we want them to as this times of the year,” Beck said.

We have another competitive meet on Friday (April 28) at Grundy Center to prepare us for conference,” said the coach.
