PLEASANTVILLE – A great weather day and some strong competition helped to lift the Braves track team to some strong performance at an invitational meet on Monday, May 6.
The Braves finished to the hosting Pleasantville squad in the team standings, won seven events, and helped their seedings in several events for the state qualifying meet on Thursday, May 9.
And . . . Montezuma set a school record in the 110-meter high hurdle shuttle relay.
Luke Brennan, Broox Stockman, Damien Knox and Garrett Watts won in 1:03.57. That topped the former mark of 1:03.67, set in 2011.
The Braves also won the 4×200, the 4×100 and the thrower’s 4×100, and got indiviual wins from Knox in the long jump and 110-meter high hurdles, and from Kenny Criswell in the 100-meter dash.
“Kenny (Criswell) was able to help his seeding for the state qualifying meet,” Braves Coach John Beck said.
“We were able to practice some of the relay combinations we are planning on running at the qualifier, as well as the 4×100 and 4×200, and the shuttle and distance medley,” Beck said.
“All of them turned in season’s bests.”
“It also was a great night to get some guys in events they don’t typically do and change a few things up,” the coach said.
“It was a beautiful day to run,” Beck said. “We were able to tune up some relays and get everyone running. We had a lot of guys compete well both in relays and individually. We were able to get some nice individual efforts in some events.”
“I was very excited with our performance as a team,” Beck said.
“The rest of the week is preparing for the qualifier on Thursday!
About Watts’ high jump – Garrett Watts won the SICL Meet high jump with a lifetime best of 6 feet, 2 inches. Originally, it went out to the media at 6-4. Beck said he thinks it was a clerical error involving meet officials.
