When you shoot .609 on threes – WOW!

Maddy McKeag nailed eight three-pointers as the Bravettes beat Baxter. (Allyson Fillmore file).

SULLY – The Montezuma Bravettes pass the ball around like it’s a hot potato and when the time is right, their shots are cobra-quick.

And accurate.

The Bravettes made more than enough of them – 14 from three-point range and 16 two-pointers, to subdue an improving Lynnville-Sully girls team, 80-49 Friday evening, Feb. 7.

The win lifted the Bravettes to 19-1 overall and assured Montezuma no worse than a tie for their second straight South Iowa Cedar League championship.

You already know that Shateah Wetering is Montezuma’s biggest gun, but other girls are stepping up to the firing line as well. The Bravettes put four players in double figures scoring in this game.

We’ll start with senior guard Maddy McKeag, whose numbers keep rising.

While Wetering led with 26 points, McKeag went off for 20 – including a stunning six-for-nine from three-point range. She is fast, and she also led the Bravettes with seven rebounds. She and Elise Boulton each had three steals. Maddy threw in a blocked shot for good measure.

Lynnville-Sully has developed a strong inside game around Mallory Loftus, (17 ppg.) Krystal Van Dyke (14) and Cally Gibbs (10). But Van Dyke, a six-footer, hasn’t played since the Sigourney game Jan. 21. So the Hawks needed to supplement from the outside, and went just three-for-14 on three-pointers. Loftus scored 12 points and Gibbs added nine.

Montezuma was a stunning 14-for-23 – that’s 60.9 percent! – from behind the arc. Overall, they were 30-for-53 for .566. Lynnville-Sully was .415 on 22-for-53.

That one is really up there!

Mia Boulton scored 11 points and was three-for-four on three-balls.

Shateah Wetering was three-for-four from behind the arc.

Guard Elise Boulton didn’t throw down a trey in this game, but tied Wetering for the team lead in assists with six.

The Bravettes passed 15 assists as a team for the third straight game, helping on 16 of their 30 made field goals.

The Bravettes led 19-10 after one quarter, 44-23 at halftime and 60-40 through three quarters. They finished things with a 20-9 fourth period.

Lynnville-Sully is 13-6.

UP NEXT – Montezuma goes non-conference at home against Grundy Center on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
