KALONA – The Bravettes finished their regular season above .500 after taking a 10-2 win over Hillcrest Academy on Friday evening, July 10.
Montezuma needed a bit of a wake-up call and winless Hillcrest provided it by taking a 1-0 lead after two innings.
But the Bravettes got the offense cranked up, scoring three runs in the third, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth, taking command with a 13-hit attack.
Kalynn Wanders swung a big stick in this one, going four-for-five with four runs batted in. She also stole a base.
Carissa Van Zee, Kailey Shaffer, Izzy Roorda and Katie Reynolds each had two hits.
Van Zee drove in one run and stole a base. Shaffer drove in two runs. Roorda hit a double, the team’s only extra base hit of the game. And Reynolds added two stolen bases.
Kassidy Mathes drove in a run with one hit and stole a base.
Second baseman Jadyn Sharer threw out four runners and recorded a pair of putouts.
Catcher Van Zee also threw out a runner.
Kallie Robison pitched all seven innings for the Bravettes. She scattered nine hits and kept her pitch count economical despite that with 82 total. She allowed two runs, both earned. She didn’t issue a walk, and struck out two.
The victory moved the Bravettes to 9-8 for the regular season.
Hillcrest Academy, formerly known as Iowa Mennonite, was at 0-11.
NO JV GAME – Friday’s action was at the varsity level only.
