NEW SHARON – Here’s one we didn’t see coming: The wrestling Braves won a dual meet.
When your numbers are low – you fill only four or five of the 14 weight classes – you can’t count on dual meet wins . .unless . .
. .Unless you wrestle another team with low numbers.
That’s what happened when the Braves scored a 19-18 win over HLV on Tuesday, Dec. 14, in a multi-school duals meet hosted by North Mahaska.
There were just two bouts actually contested in the HLV meet. Each side won one, and the dual, tied 18-18, entered tie-breaker criteria.
The Braves got one point, and the win, for scoring the most first points in the contested matches.
Overall, it was a terrific night for Montezuma’s dedicated band of grapplers. They went 11-1 in the bouts they were involved in. That included five wins via forfeit.
The other six Montezuma victories all came on pins, three of those in under one minute.
Not bad work if you can get it!
