Young bucks blister Baxter’s Bolts

BAXTER – After a running back in football has broken a long rushin attempt, or returned a punt or a kickoff for a touchdown, watch for him him to do it again, perhaps soon and maybe often.

Coaches say this. . .it has something with the brain’s reticular activating device helping to produce a desired action.

In the cases of Montezuma junior basketball forward Dane Strong and sophomore forward Talen Holland, it would be scoring great bunches of points.

Such as in Saturday’s 75-65 win over Baxter, when Strong scored 30 points and Holland had 17. Both were career highs. Add 16 from senior guard Brady Boulton, who has done this often, and you’ve got a team headed for a win . . .and maybe more in the near future.

Strong got his 30 on 12-for-21 shooting from the field, which included a modest two-for-seven from three-point range. But, he also added four-for-five from the line . . .and to that blend he added eight rebounds, four steals and an assist.

Holland’s 17 came on eight-for-12 field goal shooting.

Boulton led the Braves with five assists, and his five rebounds tied Strong for team honors.

Montezuma shot .418 from the field, and 13-for-18 from the free throw line.

The Braves led 16-12 after one quarter, 42-27 at halftime and 63-42 after three, at which point the lead was sufficient.

Montezuma went to 2-0, while Baxter fell to 2-1.
